  • - Ambar

I was bullied from 3rd grade all the way through high school. I’m a first generation immigrant from Mexico and had a difficult time adjusting. Other kids would tease me for my accent, my broken English, my funny name. My parents named me Ambar (Spanish for Amber) but made a mistake and spelled it “Hambar”. It sounded much different in English opposed to its Spanish pronunciation where the “H” was silent. The kids would call me “Hamburger” or “Hammie”. I got stomped on a couple times, slapped by a girl once and humiliated daily. In the 7th grade, a girl threatened to “beat the Mexican outta” me. I wish I could tell a story of only one bully, but I had many. I remember their faces, their first and last names. I wanted to die, literally. Due to depression, I tried to kill myself at age 13. Today, my life has been blessed. I live with my husband and 3 children, and I’m amazed at the joy I feel in my life. My bullies hurt me, but the experiences made me stronger. I’m still here, my story goes on.
