Despite being only average sized at the time, my first of many experiences of being a victim was when I was only 7 and a classmate called me fat. This always stuck with me and in the years that followed the bullying got worse. As i got older, I did begin to gain weight like many girls, and as a result I was just 11 when I joined a slimming class. Having lost 7lbs, I thought the bullying would stop, however this was not the case and over the next few years I suffered through periods of crash dieting followed by extreme weight gain. However, when i was 16, I joined slimming world and was healthy on the outside. However, as a result of the bullying, I was incredibly insecure and even with a healthy bmi and being a UK size 10, I would constantly think of my weight. As a result, I developed bulimia, having the binges characteristic of the disorder then purging. As my condition developed, I stopped the binges and would instead survive on just a bowl of porridge and fruit in a day, purging if i felt I had too much fruit or porridge. Luckily, I have identified my disorder and am in the middle of an existing battle. The reason I am sharing my story is because I think it is so important that children in particular know the lifelong effects words have on a person- words are so easy to say, but the scars they leave behind last a lifetime.
