Being a Korean-American, I felt the sting of being a minority since grade school. I had the occasional remark or small rock thrown my way. But it was nothing compared to 7th and 8th grade at my middle/high school. I was small in stature and a minority, thus I made an easy target. I was bullied by a female classmate, by older students and unseen perpetrators. I’ve been spit on, had a book thrown at the back of my head and taunted endlessly. I was terrified of going to school every single day. These are memories that I still remember. I became withdrawn. I was afraid to be myself and afraid of people. I was lonely. But things got better. I gained confidence in myself and started caring less about what others thought about me. My experience of being bullied gave me a keen sense of empathy, and I aspired to help others. I graduated from college and now I work part-time as I pursue a graduate degree and volunteer with a Pre-Pharmacy organization. Whenever you think it’s hopeless, please realize that there are people who care. We are rooting for you. We want to help.
