I was bullied when I was in middle school. I was a 12 year old with autism and a stuttering problem. I had always known I was different but being bullied was a constant reminder that I didn’t fit in and I thought no one liked me. People would constantly make fun of my stuttering and even imitate me. It really hurt my feelings. There was also a rumor about me kissing a girl, which was not true. Girls would constantly harass me about this and call me gay and lesbian. Even though I didn’t know what those words meant, they still hurt. I overcame the bullying by getting involved in activities I enjoyed and working hard in school. I set a goal for myself to earn straight A’s on my report card and reached it the first quarter of 8th grade. I wrote a song, entered it in the school arts contest and won first place. In addition, I was nominated for and won the Inspiration Award, which was an award given to one middle school student who overcame significant obstacles and was an inspiration to other students. After accomplishing so much in 8th grade, I felt much better about myself and the bullying became easier to just ignore. Once the bullies realized I was ignoring them and found out I won that big award, they stopped bothering me. If you are being bullied, hang in there, things will get better. Just find activities you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself. Pretty soon the bullying won’t bother you anymore.
