Beyond Bullies Active Bystander Pledge

As students of _________________________________ School, we pledge to band together to end bullying at our school. Every student has the right to come to school each day without the fear of being harassed, humiliated, or attacked.  As an anti-bullying advocate, I will speak up and protect targets of bullying.  School should be a safe environment.  Each student has the right to an education, regardless of body shape or size, athletic ability, physical or mental challenge, popularity, religion, sexual orientation, or race.  Allowing a human being to be humiliated, put down, laughed at or excluded is unacceptable.  From this point on, l will not be a bystander and watch in silence as bullies target and hurt another teen.  Today, I make a pledge to go beyond bullying.

  • Say “Leave them alone!”, “Cut it out!”, or “Believe whatever you want!” when I see someone being bullied, and then walk away from the bully with the target.
  • Stand up to the bully and say, "I don’t agree with you."
  • Maintain a safe distance from the bully and help the target get away.
  • Stop teens from becoming spectators encouraging the bullying.
  • Try to distract the bully by drawing his/her attention away from the target.
  • Tell a bully that spreading rumors, gossiping and excluding someone is NOT OK.
  • Become aware of the bullying policy at my school. When I see someone not following the rules, I will document what I see, and tell an adult.
  • Take a stand against a friend or someone I know and tell them to STOP, when they are making fun or laughing at someone.
  • Become alert in places where targets are vulnerable: bathrooms, gyms, locker rooms, hallways, showers, stairwells, and on the bus.
  • Make a promise to Stand Up, Be a Friend, and to Report when I witness someone bullied online, at school, or going to and from school.
